Mixed media on paper by Martin Baer, dated 1948, from the years after he left Paris for California.
Martin Baer
Martin Baer (1894–1961) was born in Chicago and attended the Art Institute of Chicago from 1910 to 1914. With his brother George he opened the Holbein Studios, later the Anarchist Studios, which closed in 1921. He studied in Munich, then moved to Paris in 1924, where he met Picasso, Soutine, and Krémègne. Paris remained his base through the 1930s, with extended travel in Algeria, Spain, England, Belgium, and Holland. He left for New York in December 1940 and settled in Carmel, California, serving as a director of the Carmel Art Association, exhibiting regularly at museums in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego, and forming a close friendship with Edward Weston. He moved to San Francisco in December 1947 and kept three studios there until his death on February 14, 1961.

Galeries Durand-Ruel, Paris (1926); Art Institute of Chicago (1926); Galerie Jeune Peinture, Paris (1928); Galerie de la Renaissance, Paris (1932); Galerie M. Bénézit, Paris (1936); Newhouse Galleries, New York (1928, 1936, 1941). His last solo exhibition was held at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, in 1943, and a memorial retrospective was mounted at the same institution in 1963.

Local to Santa Barbara? Pickup at 4 E Yanonali St is free and usually ready within 24 hours. Local delivery to Santa Barbara, Goleta and Montecito is $80 for a one-person delivery, or $160 for two people on larger and heavier pieces.
Condition, Authenticity & Returns
Everything we sell is vintage or antique, and no two pieces are the same. That means honest wear: patina, small marks, the evidence of a long life. We photograph each piece thoroughly and note anything significant in the description. If something is not clear from the photos, ask us before you buy and we will send more.
Our promise. All sales are final — but if a piece arrives damaged, or differs materially from how we described it, tell us within 48 hours of delivery and we will make it right.
