Description
The Zig Zag chair in pale blonde wood. Seat, back, and base resolve into a single cantilevered Z, with no legs.
Gerrit Rietveld
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888–1964) was a Dutch cabinetmaker turned architect and a central figure of De Stijl. He designed the Red and Blue chair in 1918 and completed the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht in 1924, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Zig Zag followed in 1934, reducing the chair to four planks. Without legs, the joints carry the entire load, resolved in dovetails and bolted battens.
Museum collections
The Museum of Modern Art holds a 1934 Zig Zag made by Gerard van de Groenekan (object 349.1966, gift of Phyllis B. Lambert). Examples are also held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, SFMOMA, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Attribution
Zig Zags have been produced by van de Groenekan, by Metz & Co., under license by Cassina, and by numerous unauthorized copyists. Offered as the Rietveld design, not as a documented van de Groenekan or a licensed Cassina example. We are happy to check for maker's marks or labels and provide photographs prior to purchase.

Local to Santa Barbara? Pickup at 4 E Yanonali St is free and usually ready within 24 hours. Local delivery to Santa Barbara, Goleta and Montecito is $80 for a one-person delivery, or $160 for two people on larger and heavier pieces.
Condition, Authenticity & Returns
Everything we sell is vintage or antique, and no two pieces are the same. That means honest wear: patina, small marks, the evidence of a long life. We photograph each piece thoroughly and note anything significant in the description. If something is not clear from the photos, ask us before you buy and we will send more.
Our promise. All sales are final — but if a piece arrives damaged, or differs materially from how we described it, tell us within 48 hours of delivery and we will make it right.
