David Carlen is among those few artists whose style is immediately recognizable and highly original. His images display a knowledge of human behavior both witty & wise. His material is life itself. Although usually light hearted, it sometimes evokes darker elements; but always
with an amiability that enchants us again and again. He borrows widely but in the end his superb sense of color is welded to forms clearly and surely his own. He invites the viewer into a world that may appear to be raucously out of hand, yet in terms of human comment is marvelously controlled and aesthetically precise.

As he puts it, he has been painting and thinking painting for 35 years; while painting for a livelihood in T.V. and motion picture studios. He is a native of Southern California having studied variously at local schools and colleges including Art Center, U.S.C., L.A.C.C. and occasionally with individual teachers. For the most part however he has worked alone fin-
ding his own way. We can only hope that way will continue to be a long and productive one, thus assuring us of an even greater outpouring of such original and beautiful work.
